Low Hanging Hook

I had a dream the other night… during the day I was working through Lesson 10 of “The Easy Way Discourses.” This lesson is about causality. The lesson’s exercise was to chant “MANA” and ask the Mahanta for guidance on an illness, etc. The idea being to help the student understand causality. I did the exercise, but also made it more generalized, as I already believed in causality, I didn’t feel I needed it explained to me. Instead I asked for advice.

That night I had a dream. The dream placed me on a bus with members of Eckankar. The current Mahanta (Sri Doug Kunin) was there. I sat in the back, watching him interact with all the other members. The bus stopped and people got off to go with the Mahanta to hear a teaching. Someone on the bus encouraged me to go, so I got off and followed them.

I can’t recall what the meeting or event was about. What I do remember was a feeling of dissatisfaction. There was something that bothered me. It wasn’t major, just something minimal that I was making a concern. I had heard the Mahanta say something or do something that caused me to start pondering, “is this the path for me?” It wasn’t something big. It wasn’t anything largely concerning, just something minor that I felt out of tune with.

In the dream, I was the first to leave the event and get back on the bus. The worker who encouraged me to go asked me how the event was. I replied with a, “it was ok.” She looked at me, smiled and said, “Oh you got hit with a low hanging hook.”

What she was describing as a “low hanging hook,” was something minor, perhaps insignificant, that I had allowed to pull me off the path. The antidote for this, is to do the spiritual practices, operate from a sense of spiritual love, and let the inner master flow through me.
